STEPHEN GEORGE ESSON

STEPHEN GEORGE ESSON, Pilot Officer, R.A.F., eldest son ofGeorge Forbes Esson
(I894-I903),
Lieutenant-Commander, R.N.R., was killed in action in June
I940,
aged twenty-one, when the
bomber of which he was Captain was shot down by Gennan fighters over Holland and crashed at
Willemsoord. The bodies of the crew were buried in a c0111munal grave in the local cemetery, full
military honours being accorded by the Dutch authorities . On leaving the School he joined the cadet
~hip,
H.M.S.
Conway,
where he took the aviation course and became Cadet Captain. He obtained
his "A" flying licence when he was eighteen, and in February
I938
he was granted a regular com–
mission in the R.A.F. He was lightweight boxing champion of the R.A.F., and runner-up in the
inter-Services boxing championship of
I939.
