19l8:
AUGUST TO THE ARMISTICE
Wervicq after half an hour's bombardment by four batteries. But
their objective was part of a well-prepared position and could not be
reached by local attacks. Machine-gun fire was so heavy that
practically no progress could be made, in spite of an attempt by
"W" Company to find on the left a flank which could be turned.
On the evening of the 2nd the two battalions were relieved and
moved back to the neighbourhood of Zillebeke. The l8th marched
through Ypres with its band playing and claimed that this was the
first occasion on which a band had been heard in Ypres since 19l4.
The casualties during this period of four days' fighting had been
heavy, but the troops had behaved magnificently. In addition to the
acts of individual gallantry already quoted, mention must be made of a
devoted signaller of the l7th Battalion, Private B. Rees, M.M., who
went out time after time under heavy fire, repairing the lines as soon
as they were broken.
It
was almost entirely due to his energy that
touch was maintained throughout the operations between the
battalion and two brigade headquarters. Amongst the decorations
awarded for this action were the following:-
