WITH
the Turks holding the heights commanding the British
positions across the tip of the Gallipoli Peninsula, there was by now
little hope of any advance along the direction of the original landing ;
nor was there room
in
that area to use many reinforcements if they
were made available. The invaders could not make any headway;
and considerations of prestige were held to forbid evacuation. When,
therefore, additional divisions were allotted to the Mediterranean
Expeditionary Force
in
July,
I9I5,
the Commander-in-Chief
(General Sir Ian Hamilton) decided to use a large part of them for a
new landing at Suvla Bay, combined with a thrust from the nearby
Anzac front, with the object of severing the middle of the peninsula
and securing the heights of Achi Baba which commanded the
Narrows beyond them. At the same time, he planned a new attack
on the Helies front to make such progress as might be practicable
with the additional troops allotted and at least to hold there, or
attract thither, the maximum number of Turks during the Suvla
operations.

Amidst all the controversy that has raged about the responsibility
for the failure of the plan for a new landing at Suvla Bay, from which
so much might have resulted, nobody has ever dared to suggest that
any blame could be attached to the regimental officers and men who

took part in it. Indeed, the story of the deeds of the 9th LancashJre
Fusiliers (Lieutenant-Colonel H. M. Welstead, Leicestershire
Regiment) at Suvla shows clearly that more than once they took the
initiative
in
seeking to snatch success out of the chaos produced by
ill-luck and bad staff work and that throughout they displayed
great qualities, all the more creditable because it was their first
