When the officer was himself overcome Serjt. Toole succeeded in extricating him also.

our wire under very heavy fire. Later he organized a bombing party and drove
off an enemy attack. On another occasion he established a block under heavy fire,
thereby saving a critical situation.

objective and then leading on. Between the first and second objective he took a
rifle and rushed forward, firing into the enemy's trench, quickly followed by his men.
Finally, he found himself in command of the battalion and consolidated the final
